Hello everyone, I just registered and I would like to learn more about Carnatic music. I am a college student at Arizona State University and I have been a music lover for a very long time, but I have only been exposed to western music (I love Bach, Mozart, etc.) My sister let me listen to some sitar music once and I really liked it. I did a search on wikipedia for Indian classical music and I really didn't know where to start. I found out the names of some composers (Tyāgarāja, Shayama Shastri, Muthuswami Diksitar) but I couldn't find anything by any of them on Amazon.com. Can anyone give a curious westerner a bit of direction in exploring Indian music? And a little advice on how to find this music? I listened to the sound files on this site and I found them very interesting, but I would like to find something a little more substantial (like a CD). Thanks everyone. My name is David by the way.

Hi David, I hope you've checked out the Carnatic Sampler at www.karnatik.com/sampler.shtmlIt should give you a small taste of the variety of Carnatic music. Check the Links page under "Listening" for several places you can listen to Carnatic music online (tons of sites!), and the Places to Buy section of that page for where you can get your hands on some CDs or tapes. rani
