I just started studying carnatic vocal music here in Chennai a month ago. I am a young male (25) who has zero voice training previous. My teacher tried to have me sing at what I was told was normal for a male somewhere around d or f on my sruti box. eventually she saw that I couldn't sing that low... it hurt my voice, made a growling/raspy sound, and sa + re were MUCH quieter than all the rest of the notes. We settled on G as my Sa. Still my Sa and Re are very quiet and sometimes raspy. I've noticed if I sing too long my voice gets harsh and I've had to take herbs (partly this must be chennai pollution). My teacher is unsympathetic and thinks it's all in my mind which is could be. I started experimenting though and noticed if I go up to b my Sa and Re are loud and clear. I can also sing all the way up to the upper octave Pa, and to lower octave Pa from there (starting at G I can't go down beyond lower octave Ni). Still my upper range at B is a little strained. I can sing the upper octaves fine if I start at A for my Sa, though my Sa is still quiet my Re is louder.
My question is, where should I be singing? Is it normal to feel discomfort and pain when you first begin singing (i have a daily hour lesson, and practise a few hours per day)? Will my voice learn to sing low and thereby become loud and clear in the Sa and Re? Is it ok to sing high? Where does Sa fall for most men? Any advise is greatly appreciated since I can't find anyone willing to discuss this with me.
thanks, t
